More than 10% of children don’t own a single book — a statistic that inspired Shropshire children’s author Michael McCarthy to take action.
With nine books to his name and a decent collection of hats, Michael has teamed up with Shropshire Education to distribute one of his books across the counties schools.
Thanks to support from fellow local author Eleanor Dixon and the amazing team at David Lloyd Shrewsbury, this inspiring project will begin delivering books later this year — ensuring every child aged 4 to 7 in Shropshire receives a book they can call their own.
Michael was born in Liverpool and is registered blind, is hemiplegic and has learning difficulties. Writing stories has been a life-long ambition and is now being realised, with great success, in his series of books describing the
adventures of two mischievous dogs. Woodstock and Churchill’s personalities are based on two real dogs which have been in his life. Other bonus stories are also sometimes included, often involving small garden bird characters – another passion of his!
Aged 8, Michael had a near fatal accident which left him physically and mentally challenged. After spending many months in a coma/semi-coma state, he endured hours of painful physiotherapy which eventually led to him being able to walk again.
Michael is a very purposeful character and has overcome great adversity. His sheer determination has led him to achieve completing the London Marathon, climbing mountains, competing in a London to Paris bike ride challenge, a swimming gold medal in the Special Olympics, Great North Run twice, visiting Kenya to help the Street Kids plus raising funds for charity.
Michael tells his stories to a friend Catherine Brown who transcribes for him. The team is complete with Rob Bennett creating magical and colourful illustrations that make the stories jump off the page.
