I was in Liverpool last night at the private view of Mary Seacole – ‘A Figure of Care’ Exhibition at St George’s Hall, Liverpool Stable Gallery.
The ST. GEORGE’S HALL CHARITABLE TRUST hosted this special exhibition, showcasing maquettes of a statue dedicated to Mary Seacole (1805–1881), the pioneering nurse, healer, and humanitarian whose courage and compassion saved countless lives.
Three maquettes have been commissioned from well known sculptors and another 30 have been produced by Liverpool John Moores University, the The City of Liverpool College and Liverpool Hope University
If you don’t know, Mary’s story is one of resilience and service.
Born in Jamaica, she overcame prejudice to bring her skills to the battlefields of the Crimean War, where she became known as “Mother Seacole” to soldiers in need.
This exhibition invites you to explore the artistic journey behind the creation of a permanent marble statue of Mary Seacole, planned for installation in the Great Hall of St George’s Hall.
The maquettes on display represent the early stages of this monumental tribute; a vision of how Liverpool will honour her enduring contribution to history.
A special thanks to Gary Millar FJMU, Trustee of St George’s Hall Charitable Trust for the invite and of course, the Lord Mayor Cllr Barbara Murray serving in my head of comms role for her campaign.
How fitting to see the great Michelle Cox there too.
