IF I WAS STRUGGLING AND IN NEED OF SUPPORT, I’D RATHER BE IN LIVERPOOL

By Joel Jelen

FROM MY OBSERVATIONS OVER A 30 YEAR PERIOD, SUPPORT FOR OTHERS HERE CAN MATCH ANYWHERE IN THE UK…

I regularly come across Liverpudlians with hearts of gold in the world of business I’m immersed in daily.

They work in the harsh, highly competitive world of the private sector. They also operate in the many different community organisations and enterprises that exist across the Liverpool City Region.

These folk are not defined by the work they do but more by their outlook.

They are human beings.

So many people I work with who are clients and close contacts have this attitude.

Looking out for each other.

It’s often just checking in with someone and then talking about business – it actually feels weird to me now when that doesn’t happen.

I acknowledge that loads of Liverpudlians reading this will say that it’s normal.

Maybe in Liverpool.

One particular organisation that is the epitome of being human and a great ambassador for Liverpool is An Hour for Others

Founded by Gillian Watkins and Kevin Morland a dozen years ago, how they go about their business of delivering for the community is literally role-model worthy.

My Planet Liverpool Magazine has just released an interview I did with them recently that was full of emotion, full of the kind of business and people sentiment that deserves wide recognition.

Prior to now, An Hour For Others has quietly gone about its priceless work, relentlessly supporting others across Merseyside.

Now they want to reach out and share their story and successes to date amongst a wider audience.

Why? Simple. So they can support more human beings.

The article goes some way in charting their rise but it’s just the beginning.

Expect to hear so much more about their achievements, partnerships, and what drove co-founder Kev in the first instance – he shares in the article how there was a very special date involved.

There’s already been tears and laughter in my journey to find out more about theirs, and that was just in our first meeting.

An Hour For Others have so many anecdotal, true stories to share much wider like when LFC’s Mamadou Sakho turned up as a volunteer to paint someone’s house!

For now though, please take a two minute read to acquaint yourselves.

It will warm your heart. And so many people from Liverpool are so good at doing that.
