LIVERPOOL HAS A VERY SOULFUL NEW LORD MAYOR

By Joel Jelen

Liverpool has got a really soulful new mayor and it was an honour to witness Lord Mayor Cllr Barbara Murray getting sworn in last week…

As head of communications on the Lord Mayor’s Committee, I’ll be sharing more about the Mayor’s campaign in the coming months, who will benefit and how you can get involved.

The new Liverpool Lord Mayor has revealed that getting more young people access to the skills required to qualify for better jobs is her campaign’s driving force for the year ahead.

The Lord Mayor has flown the flag for children and young people for decades in the city and is Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills. She has held this position since 2018. She is also the elected member for Yew Tree ward (since 2007).

She was returned for her fifth term as a city councillor in the all-out elections two years ago and has regularly spoken about the city’s major skills gap when it comes to filling the top jobs.

The Lord Mayor set up the Liverpool Literacy Cycle in 2020 to help close the literacy gap as part of helping young people in their future career development.

She is also hoping to dramatically boost youth work provision and safe places for children and youth to develop in her campaign.

The Lord Mayor will be bolstered by the strong support she has already been able to muster via The Lord Mayoral Committee.

Her chosen charity is the Liverpool Education Grants Charitable Trust, previously known as the Council of Education, which provides financial awards, bursaries and grants for extracurricular and cultural activities to students up to the age of 25 years.

The Lord Mayor has asked the charity to set up a specific funding stream for lifelong learning and skills to improve employability and address poverty. The direct beneficiaries during her mayoral year will be Liverpool Literacy Cycle, Youth Works apprenticeships and Liverpool Poetry Space. Her consort will be son Richard, and her daughters Ruth and Elizabeth who will share the role of Lady Mayoress.
