PHONE CALLS TO JOURNALISTS ALWAYS WIN OVER ONLINE COMMS…

By Joel Jelen

I’m unsure why but all of a sudden, more journalists working at a national and trade level are happy to now speak on the phone again/enclose details of their telephone number.

This is in stark contrast to the trend of recent years following the Pandemic when communication felt largely confined to online only.

Five reasons why I prefer a call than an email when conversing with journalists:

It’s humanising! The journalist here’s my emotion, personal manner, character, sentiment and attitude around a subject or message I’m looking to convey.

It’s efficient! And brain/nervous system-friendly, by avoiding viral-like streams of messages about the same subject over an unknown duration!

Trust! I’ve built great relationships from phone calls alongside the trust and empathy that comes with that.

Complexity and clarity! You can shape what you need from beginning to end in one phone call – especially useful in technical enquiries – leaving no questions unanswered.

Phone call to connect, email to document.
